Holly finally made the trip to the Sisters Quilt show. Shortly after we purchased our trailer, I was able to book one of the last RV spots available in the Siters area. We stayed at Hoodoo's Black Butte RV and Motel Resort in Camp Sherman, Oregon. Camp Sherman is just a few miles on our side of Sisters, so it allowed us to avoid going through all the traffic in Sisters during the Quilt Show. We had no trouble negotiating the drive up the mountain and the pass despite a one lane bridge where repairs were being made. There was very light traffic due to our early start.
The resort was very near the Metolius river and Camp Sherman store, so the location was great. The Camp Sherman Store has been in its current building since 1922, and currently it serves as a post office, country general store, deli, and a nice fly fishing shop. Holly and I love to go over for the nice deli snacks that are available, and Nathan spent hours looking at the fly fishing equipment and talking to the clerks about the fishing. We got a large, partial hookup spot that gave us plenty of room. We were settled in by about 5PM on Friday, and we enjoyed a steak dinner that we made on the grill.
Saturday morning I dropped Holly off with her friends in Sisters who were staying at their very nice summer home. The view of the Three Sisters is from their back porch. I took the back way to the summer house which is on the outskirts of Sisters to avoid the traffic. The 15 mile drive was very scenic allowing us numerous views of the mountains and ranches along the way. I even saw several mule deer with fawns that still had their spots on the way back.
I was back in Camp Sherman by about 9AM. Nathan and I got ready and had some breakfast at the Camp Sherman Store before starting a mountain bike ride to the Head of the Metolius. We took a scenic combination of winding horse trails, forest service roads, and main roads on our ride of about 12 miles, and made it back to the trailer by a little after noon. The views were fantastic along the entire drive and we saw lots of wildlife including several mule deer. Sadie was waiting there for us in air conditioned comfort. After a little nap, it was time to go pick up Holly from the quilt show.
I arrived back at the cabin at about 3PM and got the details on the quilt show. Apparently, there was quite a range of quilts with costs of some exceeding $10, 000.00. When we got back to the trailer, Holly and I took Sadie for a walk to the store and a mid-afternoon snack. We did some sightseeing along the river and took some wonderful photos. Nathan went out fly fishing during the afternoon while Holly and I prepared some halibut and cod that some friends brought back from Alaska. Holly used a special recipe for a fantastic yogurt dill sauce. We left Cam Sherman just after noon on Sunday and made a leisurely drive down the mountain. The bridge repair on highway 20 must have kept away most of the traffic because we saw very few other vehicles. Theoretically, I had a full two feet of clearance on either side of my rig, but I wasn’t looking back. Nathan and I are getting better and better backing our rig into the driveway. Although there is only about 6” of clearance between our rig, our house, and the retaining wall while backing in, it seems to get easier and easier each time I do it.
